Cedros Island

Deepwater yellowtail

I was fishing at Cedros at the end of October, and the yellowtail would not bite any Surface Irons. They were concentrated around 150′ to 200′ deep, and YoYo was getting hammered. I met someone on the trip who let me use the 6-oz. deadhead iron and all my yellows hammered on it for three days. The heavier weight, combined with the size and profile, allowed me to get to the bottom quickly and stay vertical in the zone, and I constantly got bit. Great lures, and as soon as I returned home, I purchased a bunch of them!!

I’ll pull on iron and fish for the next two weeks until my arms fall off in the great fishing village of Bahia Asunción! The food is incredible, the beers are cold, the fish are biting, and the boat is running as it should!…. Jim Kelley is with Ross Zoerhof.

Punta Chivato

Hi Gary. Report for Punta Chivato. The Dorado are scarce nowadays. But still around for the hard working Fisherman. We did get several in October and November. along with Two Marlin (released of course. )The Yellowtail are moving in Theresa got her personal best. Wind is a factor. Roosters are roaming around the usual shallow beaches as long there are some rocks below. Along with some Sierra. Of Course, Pargo off the rocky beaches. Scored a nice Golden Trevally. Several days ago. Watch for some pics. Craig and Theresa Cove

Loreto

Windy winter has dropped by for the annual three-month visit. The yellowtail are deep and biting live mackerel and cut bait. Trolled hard baits have been stirring up a mix along the coast. Sierra and small roosterfish have been eager to inhale offerings.

Scuba trips have been the most numerous to dare the ocean spray and swells. Before sunrise, the Marina rocks continue to attract some local surf casters.

Live bait and almost anything shiny is the way to go as the water turns green and cold. Winter in Baja with wind and snowbirds is here now…Rick Hill

MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ FISHING REPORT from Tailhunter Sportfishing for the Week of Nov.14-22, 2022

East Cape

Puerto Los Cabos

We are winding down the busy fall season, typical for after Thanksgiving. We are seeing a lull in tourist activity as people begin planning for the Christmas and New Year’s Holidays. There were moderate crowds of anglers this past week, and weather patterns have become increasingly unpredictable. There are more north winds. Most of the week, the wind blew, limiting options for anglers, even when the forecast predicted a lighter breeze. Ocean swells were minimal, except for wind chop on offshore grounds. The water temperature was still averaging near 80 degrees. The wind contributed to pushing in currents that were not as clean or as blue as in previous weeks; it was a bit off colored. The weather is very comfortable, with highs around 80 degrees and lows down to 63 degrees, scattered cloud cover, and plenty of sunshine.

Sportfishing fleets have been fishing the grounds from Palmilla, straight off San Jose del Cabo, Gordo Banks, La Fortuna, Iman, San Luis, and as far north as Vinorama. The most popular grounds were the Iman Bank, where wahoo schools were concentrated. The bite varied daily, as pressure was heavy, and the fish grew finicky from all the boat traffic. The best chances were trolling live baits such as caballito or chihuil, though dead bait sometimes worked, as did casting yo-yo jigs. We saw wahoo ranging from 15 pounds on up to one monster wahoo weighed in on Saturday weighing 60 pounds. On some days, charters had as many as five wahoo, while others were fortunate to land one!

Of course, as is typical, many of the wahoo strikes were lost. However, one out of three always seems to be a pretty good average for the hookup-to-actual-landing ratio!

The same grounds also produced dorado, a handful of yellowfin tuna, sailfish, and striped marlin. However, dorado were not nearly as numerous as in recent weeks; most were under ten pounds, and the exception was a few weighing up to 15 pounds.

The best local marlin bite was found straight off the Marina, from three to five miles offshore; this is where schools of mackerel are showing and attracting striped marlin. A couple more black marlin in the 300 to the 350-pound range were landed off the Gordo Banks. One 239-pound yellowfin was also landed off these banks, plus a couple of cow-sized tuna were lost after long battles, as they were seen circling near the boat but ended up breaking off. We expect that chances for these larger fish will continue as long as conditions remain favorable.

Not much to report off the bottom or near-shore – a few sierra were brought in, plus bonito and triggerfish. Hopefully, the schools of sardina will rebound soon. They are always a preferred bait for the inshore and shallow-structure action. Good Fishing! EricBrictson, Gordo Banks Pangas

Calico bass are running along the outer edge of the kelp bed, while sand bass and breezing bonito, weighing around three pounds, with a few topping out at the six-pound mark, are found in the flats toward South Island, along with a few sheepshead and rockfish on the bottom. …Fishdope.com

Coronado Canyon / 226-302 / 230 / 371 / 425 / Upper Hidden / Above 32 00

It’s very quiet on the “local” scene.
The kelps are either dry or have a tiny 4 or 5-inch yellowtail.
Dorado are long gone.
It is possible to run into some tuna and/or big bonito in the Canyon, but it is also possible you might not find anything. …Fishdope.com

***Tackle Tip***
Nomad lures and MadMacs are the top choices this season, but others will do the job just as well.
The Halco Max is another lure that works when trolled at 8 to 12 knots, but any of the sardine colors will work.
There are also the Bomber HST8 and Marauder plugs.
We recommend swapping the trailing hook with a big treble hook for these lures.
